There’s an unforgettable one-word line in Undertale’s genocide route:
Determination.
By itself, it’s just a word. In context, however, it’s a statement about video game completionism, one that encapsulates the mindstate of players (un)fortunate enough to ever reach that point.
Now, in Undertale, determination isn’t simply a strong will. It’s the force that allows you to — diegetically — save the game. Plus, most save points have flavor text: short, playful sentences connected to the environment.
The sound of rushing water, the relaxing atmosphere of a hotel… they fill you with determination.
You’re determined to progress, yes, but you still care enough to notice these details. You still care about this world’s inhabitants — and your own experiences — your destination guides your hand, but the point is the journey itself.
On the genocide route, however, save points double as kill counters. Once you kill everything, their text simply reads:
“Determination.”
Those short, playful sentences — the life and color they held — are gone. You’re no longer determined because you’re striving to make the world better, or even because you want more entertainment.
Now, you’re determined because you just are.
The genocide route is about video game violence, yes — but it’s also about completionism — and playing with your emotional attachment to the story by balancing your desire for more content against your investment in the wellbeing of the characters.
You’re upset, sure — but you have to finish the game. Except… you don’t.
You already know what’ll happen.
These conflicts, these discomforts — they’re what give the titular line its power.
The line itself is short. Utilitarian. Almost nothing. A mirror of your interactions with the world, of how you’ve stripped it down to its mechanics.
What doesn’t get said is just as important as what does.
When we think of Undertale’s genocide route, we tend to think of its most dramatic scenes. But it’s more than that — it’s also the spaces between them — the intentional emptiness and subtle writing.
It’s those quiet moments prompting players to reflect on their behavior — and on what made them so determined in the first place.
