Super Daryl Deluxe, a RPGvania with a brawler-style combat system and a very stylish hand-drawn art style, is out now Switch, Playstation 4 and PC. The game has been developed by Dan and Dary Games, studio who brought life to the very unique Water Falls High School, in case you were missing out those student times.
My first encounter with the game felt like a surreal experience: a trailer highlighted the story to come, with a nerdy student called Daryl and a huge group of foes trying to get on his way. Sharks, vikings, spirits and giant weapons looked common for the story, while a catchy rock song was playing on the background, as if it were a TV show from the 80s. To my surprise, the launch trailer does nothing but expand even further upon this:
A new mysterious principal doesn’t seem to be doing much for the students that have been disappearing lately. Classrooms are in lockdown (hooray!) but some rumours indicate that an evil force that tried to destroy the world 40 years ago might be coming back (not cool). While Daryl doesn’t seem like a superhero, a self-help book with over 45 powers to learn and upgrade, along with a number of side quests, will make him be the chosen fighter to bring peace back to each hallway.
