Midway through The Legend of Heroes: Trails from Zero, you rescue a young girl.
Her name is KeA. She can’t remember anything prior to her rescue, but she doesn’t really mind it much. What she really cares for is seeing the sights and sounds of the city of Crossbell. You have a main objective to complete, but for the most part you’re given the freedom to explore the city with KeA by your side.
During this interlude chapter, aptly named after KeA herself, you pick one of your three party members to accompany you as you take her around the city, checking in with every NPC you’ve met as they point out how adorable KeA is, all while she brims with joy at every hidden nook and cranny. There’s some side-quests strewn about for you to find, requiring you to talk to NPCs that are pretty out of the way compared to the main chapter’s side-quests; but because you’re already primed to explore the city, hanging out with KeA and your chosen party member feels less like engaging with busywork and more like revisiting familiar ground.
The chapter speaks to the core theme of Trails from Zero. The people you talk to, the shops you buy stuff in, the equipment you upgrade, they’re all these intersecting, coiled beings that respond to one another as elements of a singular setting. You explore the city at first as a newcomer, and when you hit this chapter you experience it as someone introducing it to someone else. It plays into the familiarity you grow into having with the city in a tactile, ludic manner that makes the setting feel alive.
