June 8 is celebrated around the world as Best Friends Day. While I don’t have any friends, let alone a best friend, I like to live vicariously through Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima. The creative visionary is always posting great photographs of him and his famous buddies on social media. In fact, it’s almost baffling how many celebrities that Hideo Kojima finds himself hanging out with.
He typically surrounds himself with other creative types ranging from actors to filmmakers, and quite a few have even become collaborators. In order to celebrate the many great friendships of Hideo Kojima, I’ve decided to spotlight 10 of his greatest bromances.
It’s no secret that Hideo Kojima has a deep admiration for films. So, it’s only natural that he has some buddies in the film industry. In the case of Kong: Skull Island director Jordan Vogt-Roberts, the love is a mutual appreciation, as he’s such a fan of Kojima’s work that he’s set to direct a Metal Gear film adaptation. Even after Kojima departed Konami, the two have still been seen hanging out together and Vogt-Roberts was even on-set to check out some Death Stranding cinematics. It’s not that surprising since who wouldn’t want to be around that epic beard!
Who wouldn’t want to hang out with Jack Bauer? For Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes and The Phantom Pain, Kojima decided to use Kiefer Sutherland to voice Snake rather than long time collaborator David Hayter. While some fans were upset by the move, the actor did a great job in the role and we got some great photos of Hideo and Kiefer hanging out.
Who wouldn’t want to hang out with Mads Mikkelsen? The masterful actor is the definition of dreamy, but only Kojima has the ability to chill with Mads whenever he wants. The duo are working together on the upcoming Death Stranding, and always appear to be having a great time whenever they are off the clock as well!
One bromance that probably wasn’t expected by many is with Gears of War creator Cliff Bleszinski. Beyond the iconic photo seen above, the two have hung out at industry events for many years. In fact, Kojima even asked Cliff if he would help out with the development of Silent Hills. While that didn’t happen, hopefully the duo will work together in some capacity in the future (as long as Cliff can find time to do something other than eating out his wife’s ass).
Before Elon Musk, the talented musician Grimes spent her days hanging out with Hideo Kojima and Norman Reedus (more on him soon). The two took some adorable photos together, and Kojima even got his vinyl copy of Art Angels (the best album of 2015, sorry Carly Rae Jepsen) signed by the artist.
The Walking Dead star Norman Reedus has a television show where he just rides around the world on motorcycles, so it’s safe to say that he’s one of the coolest people that currently walks the Earth. Kojima’s friendship with the actor has been well established as Reedus was set to star in Silent Hills before the horror game was canceled. Now, he’s the star of Death Stranding and we can get great photos like the one above at regular intervals.
Officially gaming’s cutest friendship, the bromance between journalist and presenter Geoff Keighley and Kojima has been going on for years. Their interactions at The Game Awards have put them in the eyes of millions, and Geoff notably gave an emotional speech in Kojima’s honor after Konami had banned him from attending the year prior.
Guillermo Del Toro
While the two directors have mastered different fields, there’s no denying that both Guillermo Del Toro and Kojima are royalty. The friendship between the two has been ongoing for years, and they first began to collaborate for Silent Hills. After that was canceled and Del Toro famously said “F**k Konami,” the two resurfaced again as Del Toro will play a role in Death Stranding.
Another one of the victims of Silent Hills, famed horror manga artist Junji Ito was set to collaborate on the project. Considering how terrifying Tomie and Uzumaki are, maybe Konami was saving the general public from being scarred forever. Even before the working relationship began, the two artists have been having dinners and taking photos together.
After Kojima left Konami, it was up to Mark Cerny to wine and dine the enigmatic creator on Sony’s behalf. The duo went on a ten day trip across the world, and quickly became one of the cutest couples in all of gaming. Not only is this friendship great, but it’s also fruitful as it helped make Death Stranding a reality.
